Classic Apple Crumble

There’s no better way to finish off a dinner party in winter
Difficulty Level: Easy
Serves: 6

1kg of apples (ideally Granny Smith, or Pink Lady)
1 ½ cups of caster sugar
¾ cup of flour
¾ cup of rolled oats
50g of slivered almonds
50g of unsalted butter

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 190 C
  2. Peel and core the apples and cut them into 2-3cm chunks
  3. Place the apples in a large saucepan, together with 2 tablespoons of water and 1 cup of caster sugar. Cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, for 5mins or until the apples have softened
  4. Spray a shallow baking dish with oil and then tip the apple mixture into it
  5. Chop the butter into small cubes. Then, place the butter, flour and oats in a bowl
  6. Using your fingers, rub together the crumble mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Then, mix in the almonds and ½ cup of caster sugar
  7. Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the fruit and then bake for 20mins
  8. Serve hot with a side of vanilla ice cream
